Project Title: Re-imagining nanaimo
Project Type: WayFinding
Client: School Project
Softwares Used: Illustrator, Photoshop

Year: 2023

With this assignement, I was exposed to solving 3-D communication problems by practicing a comprehensive design process that included research, concept development, and explorations of concepts in visual form. I was challenged to create a strong brand identity for the city of Nanaimo

Goals

To create a strong brand identity.
To communicate the city’s image, soul, history and culture. To revive downtown Nanaimo into an attractive destination. To highlight its best characteristics to increase its potential to be perceived positively by its citizens, attract residents, and bolster business.
To compete with various destinations for public attention in business and tourism. To change people’s typical perceptions about the city: dull, rough, nasty planned.

Objectives

To create a logo/word mark/icon.
I will design a map and identify significant landmarks, roadways, places of interest, and more for our audience. I will also redesign existing signage or create my own. To develop and mock up a site-specific work that connects and inspires those using the space. To design hypothetical merchandise items that showcase and build on the ID : artwork, memorials, gateways, landmarks, super-scaled graphics, contextual elements, and place markers

Brand Guidelines

In this brand guideline, I outlined the visual and messaging elements that define a brand's identity, such as Brand Overview and Introduction, Logo Usage, Color Palette, Typography, Imagery and Photography, Iconography, Applications, etc.

Logo and Variations

This logo is a combination of the iconography inspired by some of the most relevant elements and characteristics of the city harbour as the centrepiece is the Bastion, created in 1853 and currently the only structure of its type in Canada. The wagon wheel symbolizes the way the city was first designed, where the street radiates out from the shore, giving the name of "The Hub City". The Mountains and ocean are characteristic of the region, same with the Douglas-fir tree, making this part of Canada an attractive destination. The lamp is a repetitive element through the harbour, which gives it character and a classic identity
